What is an Inner Child and Inner Child Healing?

“Never let the child within you die”. A common phrase that we have all heard and come across during our major tenure of growing up years! Have you ever wondered how many shades this child within can have? Love, anger, hurt, guilt, sadness etc…any one or more of these emotions can be the plot of this inner child within. 

Think of the countless times when you felt sad, misunderstood, hurt, lonely, and so on. At each such juncture, a part of you got frozen at that moment and created an inner child who is waiting for your acknowledgment even right now.

#How does an inner child communicate?

Have you ever noticed what’s the best and easiest way for a child to communicate? What does it do when it wants some extra attention to be paid to or needs some extra share of love and care? Perhaps, it shouts, screams, cries, or vice-versa goes extremely silent and sad. In a similar manner, your inner child speaks in symbols of creativity, pain, and intuition. It is the small part inside of you who is hit at the level of self-esteem somewhere which is why they exist in various shades of hurt, innocence, playfulness, unloved, neglect, unheard, etc. 

#Reparenting your inner child: -

Your inner child is more eager to connect to you provided that you are willing to meet and greet them. Here we list down a few simple ways how you can reconnect with your inner child !

1. Talking to your Inner Child: - The child within you who was left unacknowledged for so many years now needs some acknowledgment and recognition first. It needs to spend some quality time with you to know and be assured that it has a positive nurturing parent outside who is willing to take up his/her responsibility.

2. Giving yourself the freedom to live: - For all the acts of innocence and joy that you wanted to do in childhood and they unknowingly got laid back out of your fears of judgment and embarrassment, it’s now the time to give yourself and the child within that judgment-free space to live out their lives in the abundance of love, joy, and innocence.

3. Allowing yourself to make mistakes - Don’t become the same critical parent for your inner child who expects perfectionism all the time. Give your inner child that space where it feels free to learn from mistakes rather than sitting with the fear and self-doubt of doing things perfectly.

4. Practicing the attitude of Gratitude: - Work with your inner child with an attitude of gratitude. Thank your inner child for showing up every single day despite all the odds. Instead of finding flaws and blemishes all the time, show your gratitude for things done.

5. Writing letters of forgiveness and love to your inner child: - Close your eyes, relax yourself and take a walk down memory lane to check for all those times where your confidence and self-esteem as a child got crushed and then as a loving, nurturing parent integrate your lost resources of confidence and self-esteem back into the current reality. 

6. Setting free yourself from your own restrictions: - If the child within wants to try some new color of a dress or a new flavor of ice cream or simply wants to go out in the park for a relaxing walk, don’t restrict his/her desires just because you feel awkward about it for not having done it before. Grow beyond your own restrictions and let the child within feel alive.
