What is Self-Love?

A famous quote by Oscar Wilde says, “To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance”.

Were you also raised in a society where prioritizing your needs and wants before others was seen as a selfish act?

Where doing anything for self was seen as something very awkward and weird?

Where self-love most of the time was equated with self-obsession?

Perhaps, for most of us the answer to the above questions would be a big yes! Nonetheless, as a child at some point, we all might have wondered what’s so wrong being self-obsessed? So today let’s explore what the journey of self-love aka ishq khudse feels like!

# What is Self-love?

An act of nurturing and accepting your entire being! From the mistake that you made in the presentation to the mole that you see on your face, self-love is the most beautiful art of accepting the true core essence of your being. With all the strengths and feebleness, goods and the bads, lows and the highs, grace and the flaws!

It is an act of accepting yourself at all the four layers of your existence, i.e., the thought, emotion, energy, and physical body. Taking good care of yourself at all the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual planes. Being mindful about your body and diet, taking care of your skin, giving yourself the freedom to express and feel your emotions, creating that gateway for yourself where making mistakes is accepted as a learning rather than always going into the criticism mode. It’s a forgiving act of embracing and accepting our inner critic with love, patience, and compassion.

# Is self-love equal to being selfish or self-obsessed?

Oftentimes, people confuse self-love with being self-obsessed or selfish. One cannot pour from an empty cup, one of the most common phrases that we all come across whenever the topic of the table is Self-love! So, today let’s look at it through an example!

It’s as simple as, one cannot pour coke from the glass of an orange juice. If throughout your childhood, you were fed with the glasses of criticism and insecurities then the natural ingredient from your glass too would be that around criticism and not love. However, you always have an option to fill your glass with the liquid of your choice. The kind of relationship you have with yourself would determine the kind of relationship the world outside of you will share with you.

Moreover, even when one says that self-love is equal to being selfish, ask them what’s so wrong about being selfish if that’s something that helps you in your overall growth in life. The truth is you cannot love others while ignoring yourself. When you forgive yourself for all that you couldn’t do and start acknowledging the importance of your being is exactly when the Universe will start blessing you with people operating on the frequency of unconditional love!
